FINN OLAFSSON
Danish guitarist/producer Finn Olafsson is an expert on acoustic fingerpicked steel-string guitars. He began his career in 1968 as co-founder of the legendary rock band Ache - a band that became known all over Europe.
Around 1970, Finn Olafsson started working with acoustic guitars, first with Ache and later as a sideman for several Danish artists.
He is featured on more than 150 Scandinavian releases.
But it is on his solo albums and his concerts and duo records with guitarist Anders Roland that his guitar artistry is most clearly expressed. |

About the CD "Acoustic Guitar 2" (cover notes)Olafssongs OCD 044
INTRODUCTION
When I recorded the first "Acoustic Guitar" album in 1980 it was my hope to soon to follow it up with an "Acoustic Guitar Vol. 2" – another acoustic solo album – preferably entirely solo. For various reasons, however, I decided in 1981 to record an acoustic and electric album –
"Elements". A few years later, I started working as a duo with Anders Roland, and so the idea was shelved. It is hard to fathom how twenty-four years came to pass, but with this CD, my original intent has been fulfilled.
Originally, my main intention in playing acoustic guitar – as opposed to playing electric guitar in a band – was that I dreamed of being my own band. One person, one guitar. So in the interim years, I wrote a lot of music for acoustic solo guitar, much of it with a swing or a groove to it like in a band – but with all parts performed by the guitar. A few of the tracks on this CD are as much as fifteen years old. My plan was to record the music that had piled up – so far un-recorded and un-published. What happened was that – due to the inspiration I received from the guitars built for me by Ole Kehlet – I started writing a lot of new guitar pieces which seemed more interesting to record while they were fresh and present.
All tracks on this CD are recorded solo with no overdubs. The guitars are steel-stringed and I use metal claws on my right-hand fingers - plastic on the thumb.
THE GUITARS
As opposed to the first "Acoustic Guitar" on which I played American Martin guitars, the instruments on this CD are five different handmade guitars built by Ole Kehlet. They are all of an unusually high quality, sound-wise and as far as the playing action is concerned. This is true to such an extent that there are several details that I can do on a Kehlet which simply are not possible on other guitars. These guitars inspire me to go to the limit – and further.
Three of the guitars are small Folk models
- but in different versions.
One is made of East Indian rosewood (back and sides), with a quilted German spruce top (Kehlet Folk: front, pp. 8-9 & label), another is made of quilted bird’s eye maple with a German vintage coloured spruce top and "open" (classical) headstock (Kehlet Folk Vintage, booklet back & cassette back), while the third model is made of Brazilian rosewood from 1957 with a North American sitka spruce top and "open" headstock (Kehlet Folk, pp. 2-3 & 6-7). The latter I dubbed "Rio" in the following.
I also play a big Kehlet Concert model made of quilted bird’s eye maple with a quilted German spruce top. This guitar is of the ‘Dreadnought’ type (pp. 4-5). Last, but not least, I use Kehlet Guitars’ exciting 2000 model, the Kehlet Millenium, made of flame maple with a quilted German spruce top (pp. 10-11). The sound of the guitars change dramatically according to the choice of wood – and this naturally influences the nature of the music.
My track notes indicate which guitar is used on each track.
TUNINGS
I rarely tune the guitars in the normal EADGBE tuning. Actually, all the tracks on this CD are written and played in various other tunings. If you retune just a single string you abandon the tried and tested, and you have to deal with unfamiliar elements. All chords and positions are different and new, interesting possibilities and themes emerge. The track notes also give the tuning for each track.
SHEET MUSIC AND TABLATURE
For those who would like to play the tunes, Olafssongs Music Publishers will soon publish a book – also entitled "Acoustic Guitar 2" – with all the tunes written out in sheet music and tablature. The book also has some illustrations.
Along with the release of this CD, "Acoustic Guitar" from 1980 has been re-released in a re-mastered version, containing some new recordings of other tunes from this period. "Acoustic Guitar" has also been published in book form, containing sheet music, tablature, and illustrations.

About the CD "Acoustic Guitar " (cover notes)Olafssongs OCD 043
INTRODUCTION
"Acoustic Guitar" was first released on vinyl in 1980. In more ways than one, this album was a milestone for me: It was the first time I decided to do an all-acoustic recording, and it was my first entirely instrumental solo album.
Expressing myself in this simple fashion, without vocals or electric instruments, made me shift most of my energy from electric to acoustic guitar.
The first ten tracks are all from the "old" LP, and they came with the following introduction:
"A few words about me!
I started my life as a guitar player at eleven and grew up alongside the rock music of the sixties in different groups, such as "Voces". Since 1968, I’ve been playing guitar in the band "Ache" – which is where I still play rock guitar. I did not really become interested in acoustic music until 1970, so you could say that this record is standing on a foundation of honest-to-God rock! This may sound odd, but I’ve always found similarities between playing English renaissance "dance" music and straight rock, based on swing and simplicity.
In 1972, my brother Torsten and I even formed an acoustic version of Ache, and from then on I started working seriously on the acoustic guitar. For two years, I concentrated solely on classical guitar technique, teaching almost every day and becoming aware of my own errors by watching others make them! But in the long run, I couldn’t stand the rigidity of classical music, and I decided to go on the road with Ache again.
In 1976, I recorded my first solo album, "Savannah", mixing acoustic ideas with electric music. In later years, I’ve often had the opportunity to play that kind of music whenever I’ve produced other artists’ records and playing guitar on them. Lately, I’ve worked a lot with Pia Raug, to whom I am very grateful. We’ve toured extensively and recorded two albums. Working so intensely on the acoustic guitar gave me the courage to do an all-acoustic guitar album.
The music on this record was written in my home and on tours over the last few years, but the final arrangements were done in the studio while recording. I’ve added two guitars on "On the Run" and "At the Festival", and on "The Eternal Journey", a third one has been added. Torsten is very much in evidence with his fine tablas.
Guitar afficionados will be interested to know that I used two C. F. Martin’s – a D-28 and a D-45. I often use steel picks on my right hand, or a pick and two nails.
Hope you enjoy listening to this record!
Love, Finn - January 21st. 1980"
A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, but the introduction gives some idea about the background of the record.
ADDITIONAL TRACKS
Apart from the ten original tracks, I’ve recorded four extra ones for this re-release. Three of them, "The Waddling Duckling", "Tracery", and "The Rag", are from my third solo album, "Elements", from 1981. I re-recorded them because I’ve always
liked playing them and because they are closely related to the tunes on "Acoustic Guitar". The fourth re-recorded tune,
"The Eternal Journey’, I used to do live for years with my guitar duo partner, Anders Roland, who plays a Greek bouzouki
here. My brother, Torsten Olafsson, plays tablas like on the
original version.
THE GUITARS
As described in the original introduction, I recorded "Acoustic Guitar" using two C. F. Martin’s, a D-28 and a D-45. On the new tracks, I use three different handmade Danish Kehlet guitars: On "The Waddling Duckling" and "The Eternal Journey" I used a Kehlet Folk Rio, on "Tracery" I play the very first Kehlet Millenium ever built, and on "The Rag" I play a Kehlet Folk De Luxe.
TUNINGS
The tunes on this CD are from a period when I still mainly used the standard guitar tuning, EADGBE, capo’ed on the second fret. Exceptions are "At the Festival" (DADF#AD) and "The Waddling Duckling" (DADGBD).
SHEET MUSIC AND TABLATURE
For those who would like to play the tunes, they are all published by Olafssongs Music Publishers in a new book including sheet
music, tablature and illustrations.
"ACOUSTIC GUITAR 2"
One reason for re-releasing this record is that the successor to "Acoustic Guitar" – twenty four years later – has been
recorded and released by Olafssongs. Not surprisingly, it is titled "Acoustic Guitar 2" (OCD 044).

Acoustic Guitar 2
"Ein Veteran der dänischen Rock- und Folkszene schliesst mit Acoustic Guitar 2 an sein Album Acoustic Guitar von 1980 an, das zeitgleich digital bearbeitet wieder erschienen ist. Sehr entspannt, sehr schöner Ton - eine Folge zeitloser Melodien, denen man sich gerne anvertraut. Bis zum dritten Album sollten nicht wider 27 Jahre vergehen."

Introducing Finn Olafsson
Born in 1953 in Copenhagen, Finn Olafsson is a veteran of the Danish rock and folk music scene. His professional career began when, in 1968, he co-founded the rock group ACHE, renowned in all of Europe.
The group disbanded in 1980 when Finn Olafsson established his own publishing company and record label Olafssongs. He also emerged as an acoustic guitar player - and as a record producer and music publisher.
Finn Olafsson has contributed to a lot of recordings with many successful Scandinavian artists - well over 150 releases in all - including many solo and duo albums.
During the 1980’s Finn Olafsson continued his career in the acoustic guitar duo ANDERS ROLAND & FINN OLAFSSON, and after having concentrated on his work as a producer, studio musician and music publisher during the 1990’s he is now back again recording and performing with Anders Roland, playing electric & acoustic guitars with Steen Toft Andersen’s TRAVELLERS’ TALES, and - not least - recording as a solo artist.
Finn Olafsson’s new acoustic guitar music has now appeared on the album “Acoustic Guitar 2”.
Furthermore, his first acoustic guitar solo album “Acoustic Guitar” from 1980 has been remastered and rereleased on CD, including four freshly recorded bonus tracks.
In celebration of Finn Olafsson’s 50-year’s birthday in 2003, two more historic solo albums of his, namely “Savannah” and “Elements”, are scheduled for rerelease on CD during the course of 2006.
Besides, a maxi single CD presenting five tracks played on the Danish Kehlet Guitars has already been produced to be enclosed with the new Kehlet Guitars catalogue, as well as one of the two planned folios containing Finn‘s unique music for acoustic steel-stringed guitars presented in staff notation with tablature.

The guitarist
Finn Olafsson took up the guitar in 1963, at age 10.
In terms of guitar playing, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who
and The Searchers were his first and primary inspirations.
His fascination with music was overwhelming:
Practising the guitar all of
his time, there was not much time left for tedious school work, and Finn rather
fancied drawing pictures of guitars during classes at school ...
In 1964, joining forces with his elder brother Torsten - a drummer at that
time - Finn & he formed the local Copenhagen "barbed-wire group"
VOCES, one of the most popular bands appearing in youth clubs and at school
parties in their particular area of Southern Copenhagen (the small island of
Amager) where the two brothers grew up.
In 1965 through 1966 VOCES performed regularly at "Dansetten" in
the famous Copenhagen amusement park "Tivoli". Only 13 years of
age, Finn had to obtain a special permit from the police authorities to be
allowed to perform - because of the general restrictions regarding the
public serving of alcohol!
Then, in 1967, Finn formed the blues band McKenzie Set, strongly
influenced by the music of the The
Yardbirds, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Mayall and guitarists like Eric Clapton,
Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.
One year later, however, Finn made up his mind to leave The Blues when, in
'68, Torsten urged him to join the newly formed beat group Ache,
later to become internationally renowned as "the symphonic rock
band Ache", who - by the way - created the world's very first genuine rock ballet,
"De Homine Urbano",
choreographed by Royal Danish solo dancer Peter Schaufuss.
Ache disbanded in 1971 after three pretty hectic years.
But then, in 1975, Finn
took the initiative for an Ache-revival that should last until 1980.
No doubt that Ache, in its various constellations, provided the most important source of
inspiration for Finn Olafsson in his future double capacity as powerful
symphonic rock
guitarist and expert acoustic guitar finger-picker!
Finn Olafsson's fascination with the acoustic guitar (both classical and
steel-stringed Martin Western) was born in 1970. When first hearing Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's
Martins in the very front, he was completely sold. The band America, Jeff Beck's version
of "Greensleeves" and Bert Jansch's "Angie" inspired him
much, too.
Already on Ache's second album "Green Man" (1970) the title track
features a long acoustic guitar intro, and the final step was taken when, in
1972, Finn and Torsten formed the group Acoustic Ache.
In that context the acoustic guitars took the lead for the first time, the
two brothers having jammed on their Western guitars over a couple of years when
they were not performing heavy rock with Ache.
Acoustic Ache, eventually, turned out to become a short-lived
experience so, in 1973-75, Finn put all of his efforts into exploring the acoustic steel-string
guitar and the classical nylon-string guitar, while making his living partly
as a guitar teacher.
He also wrote plenty of instrumental music and numerous songs, some of which
were recorded on his first solo album "Savannah".
During the following 14 years Finn toured and recorded with Ache and with
lots of other prominent Danish artists like f. i. Pia Raug (1978-83), Erik Grip (1985), Helge Damsbo (1978-87),
DK (1984-86), Anne Linnet (1986-88) and Per Wium (1987-88) (see discography).
His un-compromising experiments with alternative music expressions resulted
in many solo concerts - and the two solo albums "Acoustic Guitar"
and "Elements".
In 1984 Finn initiated an intensive, creative - and extremely innovative -
team-work with the Danish guitarist and composer Anders Roland.
Together, during the 80's, they kept on delving deep as ever possible into
the potentials of instrumental acoustic finger-picked guitar music, creating
3 remarkable CDs: "Sight-seeing", "Feriedage" ("Holidays") and
"Globetrotter" - besides TV- and film music and frequent TV-appearances,
alongside with countless concert gigs all over, be it in the humblest music
clubs or at the most prestigious Danish music festivals.
In 1990, Finn Olafsson decided to quit touring for a while in order to
concentrate on international music publishing. Establishing his own
recording studio, Olafssongs Studio, during the 90s he produced a number of
significant Danish CD albums while contributing as an electric and acoustic
guitarist, too.
Then, after an eleven-year break, in 2001 Finn revived his former
collaboration with Anders Roland, with whom he is still performing and recording. Since their re-union 4 albums have been released, the two compilation albums "Tilbage til nutiden" (Danish version") and "Back to the Present" (English version), the studio-album "DUO" and the latest studio-album "Blues".
Since the Millenium Finn has also contributed to a lot of recordings with different artists like Steen Toft Andersen's "Travellers' Tales", Lars Kjædegaards Orkester "Over the Clouds", Henrik Olafsson's "Acoustic Lines", Kasper Søeborg's "GuitarSpheres" and the debut-album of the singer songwriter Tom Frederiksen - all albums also produced by Finn and released on Olafssongs.
In 2004 Olafssongs re-released Finn Olafsson's first 100% acoustic guitar solo-album "Acoustic Guitar" in a re-mastered CD version. The album includes also 4 bonus tracks recorded in 2004. Simultaneously the follow up album, "Acoustic Guitar 2", was released, contending 12 new acoustic guitar tracks written and played solo by Finn in his very unique finger-picking style. All tracks from the CD has been printed in a music book with staff notation and tablature. A re-edited music book for it's predecessor "Acoustic Guitar" has been released as well - also containing staff notation and tablature.
"Acoustic Guitar 2" was exclusively played on the Danish "Kehlet Guitars" and the maxi CD "Finn Olafsson plays Kehlet Guitars", presenting 5 tracks played on Kehlet Guitars, was produced to be enclosed in the Kehlet Guitars catalogue.
In 2007 Finn Olafsson will be producing and playing electric and acoustic guitars on the debut-album with Tom Frederiksen, he will be producing the second album on the Olafssongs label with the Danish duo "Hvid Bille" and he will produce a solo songwriter album with Anders Roland. Look out on this website for solo concerts as well as concerts with Anders Roland during the autumn of 2007.
Upon all that it is scheduled that the tracks of a new Finn Olafsson solo acoustic guitar album will be recorded. The album title? Well, that's obvious! "Acoustic Guitar 3"!

The composer
Finn Olafsson is wholly self-taught in his capacity as a composer.
At first, joining the rock group and composers' collective Ache in early
1968, the marathon-like practising, improvising and experimenting with the
other Ache musicians, Peter Mellin (hammond organ), Glenn Fischer (drums,
percussion) and Torsten Olafsson (bass, vocals), gave rise to a lot of new
musical ideas, some of which eventually chrystallized into genuinely
original Ache rock compositions.
Soon, coupling up with his brother Torsten, Finn wrote several numbers for
both Ache (1968-71) and Acoustic Ache (1971-73).
Finn composed the music & lyrics for his first solo album "Savannah"
during the period 1973-75 and - having re-formed Ache with new musicians -
in 1977-80 he contributed significantly with new material to the band's repertoire.
At that time, Finn had been seriously exploring the potentials of acoustic,
finger-picked steel-string guitar music for quite some years, and his second
solo album "Acoustic Guitar" (1980) solely presents such
instrumental guitar music, here and there discretely accompanied by Indian
tabla rhythms, performed by Finn's brother Torsten.
More instrumental guitar compositions were written for Finn's third solo
album "Elements" (1981), and during that period he also created a couple of
tracks that were recorded on Pia Raug's second album "Saga".
In 1984, well at work with the continuous creating of new acoustic guitar pieces,
Finn met the guitarist Anders Roland and a new, extraordinary acoustic
guitar duo was born. On their first album "Sight-seeing" (1984), the tracks
were written by either Anders or Finn but on the next two CDs "Feriedage" ("Holidays") and
"Globetrotter" the music was the result
of the more and more intimate collaboration between these two expert guitarists and
composers. Together they also wrote music for various TV shows, documentary
films, radio jingles and the like.
Constantly exploring new types of steel-stringed guitars and
alternative guitar tunings, many of his recent creations can be heard on the latest Anders Roland & Finn Olafsson CD album "DUO" (2003). Besides Finn Olafsson composed and recorded the music for his second solo acoustic album "Acoustic Guitar 2" which was released in Denmark late 2004.
In 2005 Finn Olafsson co-wrote the lyrics of the debut-album of Hvid Bille "Krøllede lagner" and in 2006/2007 he has been co-writing tracks for the debut-album of Danish singer songwriter Tom Frederiksen. Together with Anders Roland Finn also wrote the music for the guitar duo's latest album "Blues" (2006) for which Anders and Finn were nominated for a Danish Music Award - Folk 2007, in the category of "Best Danish Composer of the Year".
In the spring of 2007 Finn Olafsson is completing the new guitar pieces for his forthcoming solo-album "Acoustic Guitar 3".

|
The producer
Finn Olafsson debuted as a record producer in 1976 with the recording of
his own first solo album "Savannah". Having tried to work collectively in
the Ache band, it was now quite natural for him to make all decisions
regarding the production.
Lots of recording ideas were tried out and there was plenty of room for experiment
in that Finn got the opportunity of being the first producer and artist to
test and tune in the newly established ROC Studios on the island Amager (a
Copenhagen suburb).
The "Savannah" production turned out very succesfully and it was
obvious that, soon afterwards, Finn should produce the third Ache album
"Blå som altid" (1977).
With these two albums Finn proved, once and for all, to be capable of
producing quite "simple" acoustic guitar music and grand symphonic
rock with equally optimal results, and the two records became the actual
jumping-off ground for Finns long carreer as an ever innovative and
uncompromising producer and studio engineer.
Over the following three decades Finn Olafsson has produced records with numerous
artists, to mention but a few: Steen Toft Andersen, Hvid Bille, Lars Kjædegaards Orkester, Henrik Olafsson, Helge Damsbo, Pia Raug, Erik Grip, Lars Lilholt, Lasse & Mathilde, Effy og Eliten, Harlot, Excess Bleeding Heart, B-Joe, Anders Roland, Kasper Søeborg, Torsten Olafsson, Tony Vejslev - besides his own solo albums and duo albums with Anders Roland.
Since 1990 Finn's work as a producer and sound engineer has taken place primarily in his own studio, Olafssongs Studio, which is now located in Græsted, North Seeland, north of Copenhagen. |

 |
|
The music publisher
Finn Olafsson established the music publishing company Olafssongs in 1980,
but long before that time he had realized that in order to succeed - and
stay - in the music business one had also better master and control all of
the rather more boring aspects of the trade such as the administration of
copyrights,
booking, promotion, finances and accounting etc.
Having booked jobs already as a teenager, he established the two firms Ache Booking
and Ache Songs in 1975. When, in 1980, none of the existing Danish music
publishers were willing to publish a music book containing the compositions
from Finn's second solo album "Acoustic Guitar", he decided to do it himself -
assisted by his brother Torsten. That was the start of Musikforlaget
Olafssongs and during the period 1980-90 Finn and Torsten specialised in the
production and marketing of an impressive number of song books, music sheets
and educational materials presenting a great variety of contemporary Danish
pop, rock and folk music in print (see "Printed music: Olafssongs
1980-90").
For similar reasons, as the major Danish record companies sometimes proved
to be too reluctant to release Finn's more experimental music projects, the
record label Olafssongs was established, already in 1983, with the production and release of Torsten Olafsson's solo bamboo flute album "Standing Waves - Zen Shakuhachi Meditations" which has now become a genre bestseller.
In 1990 Finn Olafsson established the Olafssongs Studio and sold the Olafssongs
music book catalogue to Warner/Chappell Music, Inc. for whom he worked as
the managing director of Warner/Chappell Music Denmark A/S until April 2000.
The production of music books was continued throughout this entire period
while, simultaneously, Finn kept administering Olafssongs and
releasing records on the Olafssongs label.
Then - in April 2000 - all of Finn Olafsson's activities were concentrated
within the régi of Olafssongs again:
Music publishing, print,
record label and studio.
Finn Olafsson is a member of the Danish Music Publishers' Society,
and since 2003 a member of the Danish Rock Academy committee.
He has, among others, also been a committee member The Danish Music Publishers' Society and of PILOT, and a member of the Music Committee of KODA.
